Why the change?
In July 1990, ASN published the first issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology with the intent to publish the highest quality and innovative peer-reviewed scientific findings in the nephrology field. Since then, ASN launched two additional journals, Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (2006) and Kidney360 (2020), publishing approximately 1,000 peer-reviewed articles annually across the three journals.
To maintain our ability to quickly innovate, ensure speed to publication and distribution of nephrology science, and to effectively serve the members, authors, and readers of the journals, ASN at the direction of the President and Council of the ASN, conducted a rigorous study of the publishing landscape resulting in a partnership with Wolters Kluwer. This partnership will ensure all ASN journals will meet and exceed the criteria for scientific publishing while advancing all peer-reviewed articles and expanding global readership
Why Wolters Kluwer?
ASN selected Wolters Kluwer for its deep knowledge and understanding of scientific and medical publishing. As ASN’s publishing partner, Wolters Kluwer Health will provide the tools and services necessary to expand our reach to new audiences, streamline the submission process and provide new benefits to our members.
Will the journals change?
The editorial independence of the journal editors will not change. Starting in January 2023, Wolters Kluwer will manage the production, distribution, copy editing, sales, marketing support, journal hosting, and more. ASN will continue to own and oversee all editorial content and the peer-review process.
Utilizing the innovative capabilities and expertise of Wolter Kluwer, ASN will enhance the manuscript submission process, improve the user experience of the journal websites, and integrate with Ovid Search Service to expand reach.
What is the new manuscript submission system?
Beginning in the fourth quarter this year, ASN will launch a new manuscript submission system, Editorial Manager. This new system will streamline the submission process for all authors and provide a more efficient and effective method of engaging with ASN’s editorial teams and articles. Some featured benefits of the new submission system include:
- A standard login for authors, reviewers, and editors
- Direct integration with the copy editing and composition production system
- Increased avenues to offer reviewer recognition via ORCID, ReviewerCredits, and Publons
In the coming months, ASN will provide more information on this submission system. Manuscripts currently in process in ScholarOne and eJournal Press will not be affected by this change.
How will this affect sales and renewals of institutional subscriptions of the journals?
Effective immediately, WK will begin handling all 2023 subscription sales and renewals. Your primary contact for subscription sales and renewals is Mr. Jeffrey Simmons, jeffrey.simmons@wolterskluwer.com. WK will provide you with 2023 rates for online, print, and print+online subscriptiosn for JASN and CJASN. Kidney360 is an online-only open access journal and is available at no charge.
How will this affect institutional administrators of the journals?
In the coming months, ASN will provide further information to institutional administrators. Communications will include COUNTER statistics for 2022 and a point of contact information for all sales inquiries and questions.
When will the changes happen?
The journal websites will be migrated to the Wolters Kluwer Health platform beginning in January 2023. The new manuscript submission system will start accepting submissions in Q4 of 2022. More details and information will be forthcoming.
What does it mean for ASN members?
ASN will announce the details for the updated member benefits, including new discounts for corresponding authors, discounts on WKH nephrology books and UpToDate, seamless sign-on, and more over the coming months.
